Anderson Rosenwald Project Planning Committee Meeting
Notes from Wednesday, May 14, 2014
Meeting held on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at 11:30 a.m. at the Wagon Wheel restaurant in Mars Hill.
Attending were: David & Willa Wyatt, Oralene Simmons, Judy Futch, and Simone Bouyer.
Board Development: It will be easiest for the organization to have a non-voting board. About 12 to 13 members serving 2 or 3 year terms. Give members a break every 2 or 3 years.
Board members should be from the community. They should be involved with the project. A board of community partners may not be as committed to the project. Board membership should be composed of those with vision and heart. They can be from various institutions, but that is not mandatory. Keep the board broad. They should be interested in the community and represent the people we are serving. Rosenwald school alumni are mostly located in Asheville. At some point there will not be any alumni at all.
For bylaws we could look at other Rosenwald schools. The bylaws should be able to support the mission of the group for the next 200 years. Look at Stephens Lee and the MKL Association’s bylaws. Annie McDonald could be a great resource. Andy Reed also has experience with organizing groups.
We need: articles of incorporation and bylaws; a tax id number; 501c3 status.
On May 23 the group meeting at Stephens Lee should give input. Details finalized at June meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Simone Bouyer
